Volunteer

Our volunteers are a vital part of our program’s success and form a core part of our vision.

 

Since our launch in 2019, we have engaged over 120 guest speakers, mentors, and collaborators in the program. This is an enormous effort, and we owe it all to a city full of food entrepreneurs, social enterprises, artisans, and food consultants who share our values and who want to support a more local, supported, and connected food system in Sydney. Thank you.

 

If you share our values and vision, and want to make a difference in the future of food in Sydney, there are a number of different ways to volunteer, listed below.

Become a mentor

The most common way to volunteer at FoodLab Sydney is by becoming a mentor.

 

Mentors look different depending on the amount of time they can commit to. They can become a guest speaker, a once-off guest mentor, or are paired with a specific program participant in order to target development in a specific area of need. There are also more creative alternatives such as offering internships or volunteering opportunities at your workplace which our participants might benefit from.

 

Mentors will address macro-issues, such as marketing, business planning, costing and finance, and general emotional support for new entrepreneurs who may just want someone to encourage them on their journey. Facilities, Equipment and Pro-bono support

Whether you have a commercial kitchen space, specialty equipment, or even production facilities, we would love to chat with you about how we could work together. Typically this is one of the greatest hurdles food business owners experience when trying to scale up from cooking at home.

 

We also welcome technical assistance providers who offer industry-specific assistance in different areas of expertise, such as tax preparation, legal advice, graphic and website design, social media, recipe costing, media relations, and branding. Work Opportunities

We are always looking out of capable, passionate volunteers to help support the day-to-day operations of the program. Whether that’s organising community events, creating publicity for our participants or supporting our social media accounts, the opportunities are endless. While volunteering, you’ll gain valuable on-the-job training and an understanding of how organisations like FoodLab Sydney operate. Join us to have an impact while building skills and experience for your future.

 

All volunteers are unpaid and are based online and in-person at The University of Sydney.

Donate

Donating or sponsoring FoodLab will create a partnership that makes a lasting difference. Donations to FoodLab Sydney will go towards 100% of program operations, helping to support hundreds of food entrepreneurs from different minority backgrounds with receiving a world-class food business education, connections to industry experts, pro-bono consulting and mentorship in product, finance, marketing and operations. Donations also help us amplify the less-often heard voices in the food sector.
